First ride with SPD-SL road pedals

Well.. to be honest.. they suck!

Road pedals are even more unco to walk in than I thought (as I discovered when picking up photos on the ride home tonight). They are a prick to clip into, especially under pressure. Unclipped, they seem to float near vertical, and I tend to kick the whole pedal around and stomp my foot onto the bottom of the pedal, so that it just flies off and makes me look stupid (not hard). If I wasn’t adjusting to these for racing I’d piss them off and head straight back to SPD territory. Of course, I’m also babying them in a vain attempt to keep the sexy, shiny carbon fibre sole looking schmick. Summary: Great when pedaling, shit when stopping/stopped/starting. I’m sure I will get used to them..

On another note, the float doesn’t seem near as severe as I mentioned initially. When under load, my feet don’t seem to rotate at all, unlike the SPDs. More testing soon..

  1. Stick with them… they’re a nuisance to walk around in, sure, but keep in mind they’re not designed for that. I haven’t tried SPD-SL’s, but Looks are pretty similar in ungainliness (ie. big chunk of plastic). I don’t even really have any trouble with my Looks now that I’ve been using them for so long- it just becomes second nature after a while. The biggest hassle is probably taking off from traffic lights, but even that I’ve got down to a level where I’m clipped in within 2 pedal strokes, resting on the back of the pedal till I can get my foot in.

Yeah, so basically, it’s tricky at first but soon becomes very simple, or at least what you’re used to so it doesn’t seem so annoying. 🙂 Don’t write them off just yet! 😉

  2. I’m sure I will adjust, but that in mind ain’t gonna stop me from whinging about them! 🙂

I tell ya one good thing though.. because I rode the SS in this crap weather, the new road shoes a DRY DRY DRY! 😀

  3. You rode?! What are you, mad? 😉 Good thing about the weather today- the tunnel out of the train station was flooded which gave me a cast iron excuse to miss the first 4 classes. It turns out that the principal sent everyone who was wet home anyway, so I got to do an oral presentation to a class of 4 people. No nerves! 😉

  4. Of course I rode! Riding in the worst weather conditions gives me a chance to crap on about how hardcore I am.. 😉

I tell ya what though, I REALLY felt like staying in bed this morning. Tonight’s breast-fest (https://thehippy.net/nucleus…) made it all worthwhile! 😀

  5. Mm-hmm, yep, Hardcore… (I’ll blushingly admit I do the same thing… I just don’t go to the track when it’s wet) 😉

Are we talking bare-bosoms here? Or did these obnoxius schoolgirls maintain a shred of dignity? 😉

I feel like staying in bed tomorrow morning, like I do every morning.

Pros- Only 2 classes, then no school until Wednesday next week

Cons- I’ve got a History report due tomorrow. Guess what I just started working on?

    😉
