Know him well as my siblings and I were brought up on the stories of him.
A character known affectionately as "Hummel Hummel" He was one of many town water carters from the early 19th century and is synonymous with Hambug (just like the Bears you’ll see ALL around Berlin). Kids used to chase him around town calling out to him "Hummel, Hummel" to which he would reply "Mors, Mors" which is sort of local dialect for "arseholes!". Occasionally he’d be able to catch one od the kids and give them a hiding. The moral of the story was not to tease adults as, if you got caught, you’d get what for.
Here endeth the lesson.
They had bears in Zurich too – a summer competition. Council puts out over 600 bears and different companies decorate them. There’s prizes for winners, etc. The year before they had cows, now you see cows on balconies, roofs, etc. Apparently you can buy them (I think the whole thing might be a fundraiser)after the comp.
Stu – just a quick note: I can’t reply specifically to any of your posts. I hadn’t checked your blog for a good week or two. I was planning on catching up, but it’s just a rediculous task.
