Australia Day – What to do? What to do?

Australian Flag

Hear what Sam Kekovich has to say here.

I’ve so far avoided entering an Aussie pub whilst in Europe. You see, other than the friends and family I left behind, Milo, Cherry Ripes, Pascal Licorice All-sorts and a bit more sun, Oz doesn’t hold that much appeal any more. Guess it’s easier to be patriotic before travelling? Maybe I should head to Africa for a dose of perspective?

BUT! I think for one day of the year I can show a smidge of clever-country patriotism and at least try and find an Aussie beer to skull (no beer bongs this time.. well.. unless my arm is twisted ;-)).

Perhaps I’ll even sink so low as to talk about the cricket and relive some crushing English defeats for the locals? 😉

F_sters and VB are most definately still on my banned list – I’d rather drink from the Thames – so Coopers it is!! 🙂

The choice then becomes: a BBQ or meat pies?

Any other Aussies going out on Thursday 26th can help me decide an appropriate course of action. Some options below:

  1. Thought you would enjoy the Slammin’ Sammy link, despite your previous leanings towards veganism.

Whats great about Australia? Our social culture. By that I don’t mean conventional crap, I mean *our* social culture. Have a ponder about that.

  2. If you mean what I think you mean.. then.. it could exist over here and perhaps I just haven’t found it yet?

Perhaps everything is still fresh enough to me that I ignore the negatives?

Perhaps there’s something in the water that’s making me dillusional? (and with London water, that wouldn’t surprise me! ;))

I’m actually a little worried. Why am I not feeling much more love for "my" country?

Most other Aussies I know keep in close contact with people back home and regularly read things like The Age website. Aussies tend to clump together and swap Aussie stories and yet, I want to meet more Europeans.

Am I the _least_ patriotic Aussie ever to leave behind the golden beaches, scorching temperatures, the bbqs and bogans in Commodores?

I spend too much time thinking, I think.

    🙂

  3. Tetley’s make tea dude, not beer..

Just messing witcha, I’ve seen the beer but I can’t remember if I’ve tried it or not.

Additional: I still haven’t picked a favourite beer. It’s not like every pub serves VB, Carlton Draught, Crownies, Strongbow and that’s it. Most pubs have at least six taps and each pub has different beer suppliers. Then you have the bottled options.. variety is grand! 🙂

  4. Don’t try the tetley’s, is the advice I’ve heard. Just stick with their tea 🙂
