Gaggia Classic + Rancilio Silvia steam wand upgrade

I bought a Rancilio Silvia steaming wand from Happy Donkey and fitted it to my Gaggia Classic this morning.

Here’s another coffee geek’s Gaggia steam wand modding in pictures: forums.overclockers.co.uk – gaggia classic rancilio silvia steam wand upgrade

This new steam wand really screams compared to the turbo frother that comes standard with most Gaggia domestic machines. It’s a single hole nozzle and will take a bit of getting used to but the signs are promising.. “microfoam should pour” blah blah. How to get microfoam. www.espressovivace.com – milk texturing basics.

  1. Hi!

i was thinking of getting the exact same part from Happy Donkey too.

Only thing is, I have just bought my Classic, so its brand new and I don’t fancy cutting any parts like I have seen on YouTube.

Is the Happy Donkey part a direct replacement or did you have to cut, sand, drill etc?

  2. Andy, I didn’t cut anything when I installed the Silvia wand but you probably will have to bend the stock Gaggia steam wand a bit in order to get the retaining nut off, around the tube bends.

I guess an alternative would be to source a new nut of the same size – this would let you remove the Gaggia wand without altering it should you want to go back to stock configuration.

I wouldn’t bother though, to be honest, the Silvia wand is great.

  3. I came to this page by chance, a week after getting my Silvia wand and believing I had to return it. Indeed: bend the old Gaggia wand, get the nut out, and put the new wand in. Thanks for the tip!

  4. How did you bend the wand? Also, do you have any issues with too much pressure building up? I’m having all sorts of issues with keeping the plastic piece on the factory set up.

After reading this I’m going for the Rancilio.

    Thanks!

  5. Hi,

Is the nozzle itself removable so you can fit multi hole one from new rancilio?

  6. any tips on removing the brass nut (the one inside of the machine, barely peeps outside)? people say it can break easily; is it possible to remove the brass nut with only a spanner (no flat hex)?

  7. I can’t remember to be honest. I’m pretty sure I took the case off (it’s easy) and then just used an adjustable wrench to take it off.
