It's official – there are more bicycles sold in Australia than motor vehicles.
“According to Australian Transport Safety Bureau figures, there were more than a million bikes sold in the 2002-2003 financial year. Annual sales of motor vehicles are yet to crack the million mark, with this year predicted to be a record, but still only 960,000.”
A very singlespeed day..
Dave from “One” mag just popped into the office and dropped off brand spanking new copies of ‘One – Issue 2’ as well as some back issues, stickers and postcards!
LEGEND!!
He also happened to have the ONEmag t-shirts (hot off another press) so I scored a “poo brown” one after scamming some money from El Seano.
Green was also available, but brown will hide the dirt better – I fall down too much. The design is an exploded schematic of Shimano’s first ever thumb shifter with a subtle ONE modification. Oh the irony!! ๐
$175 is what it would cost for GripSport to modify my GT’s dropouts (make ’em horizontal!) and a further $85 to powdercoat the frame.
Given the cost of the original bike, I’ll probably take Jon’s advice and stick with a tensioner of some sort, rather than a frame mod. We shall see..
Lets see if I can get something else singlespeed into my day..
I got my ENO hub

Caught the ‘Tram Previously Known As No. 69’ (now No. 16.. bleh!) down Glenferrie Rd during lunch today. Jumped off outside Malvern Bicycles Plus, the home of Shifter Bikes. Shifter Bikes is run by Dan, the nutter who organised SSWC03 here in Oz.
He wasn’t there today, but my old mate Doug was and he knew exactly what I was in there for (Dan was probably bitching to him about me taking so long to pick up the hub! ๐ ). While I was there he showed me his mean purple commuter, a ’95 carbon Trek singlespeed also running an ENO. Talked about Project X, bikes and other shit. I eventually coughed up the cash, took from him that which was rightfully mine (i.e. I shutup bought the frickin’ hub) and left, wondering which bakery would get my business..
Glick’s(?) the kosher bakery for dessert (yeah I’m backwards) and boring ol’ Brumby’s for a sheppard’s pie.. mmm.. fresh bike parts and fresh bakery goods.. all I needed was beer..

hippy slept in..
hippy slept in and took today off after spending WAY too much time at work…
So now he’s undone the sleep in by staying up too late.. but there’s only POETS day left so it should go quickly.
I can’t give you a cool commute story.. but I can tell you that I had my first ride on the track (for the season) tonight. I waited for the novice session to finish and jumped on.
I have issues with Miche’s rear cog – I couldn’t get the Miche cog off the Miche cog-mount. So I had to run 49/18 rather than my usual 49/16 which is already a quite small training gear… Gotta see if there’s some tool available to get this stupid thing off. Position on the bike sucks too after all the road riding I’ve been doing.. but that’s probably TOB* and flexability related. Strange noises are WAY more unnerving when you have no brakes!
I also want to get another set of SPD-SLs because I don’t trust my SPDs for high-power track starts. Now that all the crap at work is done there’ll be more HOB**.
I hope Max is feeling better after his crash..

Review: S-Sun Lights
— quote —
“HughMann” on aus.bicycle:
The X-Lite Aqua white is tiny, throws out an amazing light that in total dark shines on street signs 600m away and the batteries are claimed lasts 90 hours on slow blink. Cost $20 at LBS. Batteries are 3 volt coin style.
— end quote —
I used to use one of these but I stopped because they just don’t throw enough light. LEDs are very directional too, so if the driver isn’t looking right at the single LED on this unit, they will not have anywhere near the same amount of light in their face. Yeah, I’m over X-Lites..
I now use one of these S-Sun lights:
http://www.s-sun.com.tw/p1.htm
Advantages over the X-Lite:
– uses standard AAA batts (x3) where X-Lite uses expensive watch batteries.
– 3 LEDS with a lens to spread their love around
– Doesn’t use the elastic strap mount
– I’m _sure_ they are brighter
Disadvantages:
– larger
– heavier
– can’t be mounted ‘almost anywhere’ like the X-Lite
Thoughts for the day…
Aero bars are for eating.

Murphy’s Law states that:
after drying cycling gear all night in front of a heater, it WILL piss down with rain the next morning.
